Morning Meeting
"Green Heroes" School Meeting Assembly
Kindergartners (85-90) spend nine weeks engaging in outdoor exploration, hands-on activities, and environmentally themed read alouds, as they learn what it means to be a Green Hero. They develop an understanding of the individual and group actions we can all take to positively impact the environment and each class films a video short that promotes environmental practices in their school community. As a culminating project, students presented their knowledge at a Morning Meeting in the cafeteria for KG, 1st and 2nd graders. |

Morning AnnouncementsStudents and teachers across the grade levels (500 students), from 1st through 5th, write “Tips of the Week” to promote Green School Ideas on “Wacky Wednesdays”. The student body sings the school song “Wacky, Wacky Wednesday, Wacky, Wacky Woo. Wacky, Wacky, Wednesday, What will we do? The students make their green announcements to teach different ways to reduce, reuse and recycle to keep our earth healthy.

Environmental FairsMay 4, 2019 marks our 12th Annual Environmental Fair. This is a signature event at Bodkin and we are so proud of its success! The students (587) in each grade level create crafts from recycled materials to sell at the fair and hand painted rain barrels are designed and offered at silent auction. The proceeds from the crafts and the silent auction support environmentally friendly initiatives and the non-profit Kindness in Action. There are also environmentally friendly businesses and vendors, animals, auctions, and so much to see and learn about the natural world.

Walking Field TripThe Bodkin school community continues to focus on kindness and helping others. Our annual lunch drive for the homeless is always a huge success for many reasons. Once again donations from our students provided lunches each day for a week to the individuals receiving shelter at Our Lady of the Chesapeake. Most importantly, 587 students had the unique opportunity to participate in a walking field trip to see where their donations are going. Our Lady of the Chesapeake opens the doors to their lovely "Gathering Place" hall each year as a Winter Relief Shelter to serve homeless individuals during the cold weather.

Waste-Free Wednesday
Did you know…
Americans throw away enough garbage every day to fill 63,000 garbage trucks. That's enough garbage in a year, that if we lined the garbage trucks end to end they would reach half way to the moon. That averages to about 7 pounds per person each day. It has been rightly said that “Today’s children are tomorrow’s future”. As part of our Green School Initiatives, we implement “Waste Free Wednesday”. Students who bring lunch are encouraged to pack a waste free lunch. Our hopes are that students pack a lunch in reusable containers. Although we continue to recycle our lunch trash in the cafeteria, by using reusable containers our students will see the amount of trash that can be avoided. Our goal as a school will be to only fill 2 trash cans for ALL lunch periods. In addition to a “Waste Free” lunch, we are composting. Gardening and kids are a natural mix and with our school’s various gardens, our hopes are to use our composted material. Students learn to recycle and reuse materials in an earth-friendly activity to enhance the beauty of our school. So, celebrate with us… Three cheers to “Waste Free Wednesday”! |
Science Fair
|
Not only does our school participate in Anne Arundel County's Annual Science Fair, many of our students choose to make their experiments "Earth Friendly". Students are asked to present "Green" experiments at a table during our Environmental Fair.

The entire student and staff body came together in November 2017 to create a human masterpiece showcasing Changemaking in action. Our school's theme for the year "Oceans of Opportunity", was represented through the ship's wheel design with the Earth as its center. Each spoke is colored to represent Changemaker traits: Red for Empathy, Yellow for Leadership, Green for Teamwork, and Purple for Problem Solving. Revolving around the Earth is a group of students and staff who represent the interaction of the traits to show Changemakers in action. Navigating a better world!
