Kindergarten
Fun at Camp Woodlands
Prior to the Annual Camp Woodlands/ Downs Park field trip, students (85-90) learn about the parts of a tree, tree needs, and the forest. The students then attend a trip to extend their learning about trees and participate in many tree activities. The students engaged in TREE-rific lessons about the life cycle of trees, went on a bug hunt, learned about erosion, water safety, and planted milkweed. Some of their favorite tree activities include “tree hugging”, observing trees and leaf rubbing.

How to Grow a Tree
Writing to Park Rangers
In the Social Studies curriculum, Kindergarten students (85-90) learn about community helpers. The students brainstormed a list of community helpers that help the environment. The students decided to focus on the job of a “Park Ranger”, since all of them love to go to Downs Park and play. To help the students have a better understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Park Ranger, they watched an informational video. The students helped write a thank you letter to our Park Ranger, thanking him for all of his help with keeping Downs Park clean and trash free. All of the students signed their names to the letter. We sent the letter to the Park Ranger, via the mail.

Pumpkin Planting |
Watch it grow...
Each year, Kindergarten students (85-90) carves a pumpkin in October and keeps the seeds to later plant in a container. Students get to observe, measure and record the changes as they watch the seeds germinate. Once the frost was over, they planted the vine outside in the first grade garden. |
