Water Conservation/Pollution Prevention
Tree Planting
Each year, 2013-2019, our kindergartners plant a tree. The trees are desired to help reduce runoff and erosion and to create shade in places near where children play. Four-five teachers and 90-100 children each year take part in the tree plantings. Support poles and water bags are added and the trees are mulched.

Terrapin Research
Each year, 2004-2019, the students in first, second, and fifth grade (200 students) are fortunate enough to give Maryland Diamondback Terrapins a "head start" before releasing them into the Chesapeake Bay. With this project, we emphasize the importance of keeping the Bay healthy and clean, we analyze our storm drains and assess the runoff patterns. Students gain an understanding of the importance of keeping the Watershed clean from litter and debris. They understand the importance of the storm drains and removing trash whenever possible.

Maintenance of School Grounds
|
Every year (2011-2019), the students and parents of Bodkin work to weed, mulch and rebuild the rain garden in the front of our school. This is an area where rain water collects and erosion is a problem. The students, along with our custodians, work to maintain the rain barrels to ensure that they are properly working. Each grade level participates in this endeavor. Over 583 students work together and take their turn picking up acorns, weeding, planting, and mulching.

Water Conservation Posters
All grade levels (583 students) have applied their artistic talents to create signs that encourage students to conserve water. The signs are posted around water fountains to remind students to take quick drinks. They are also posted in restrooms to encourage students to wash their hands quickly in order to save water.

Don't Be A Litter Bug Club
|
In 2014, as part of our Green School Initiatives, students (approximately 25-30 per grade level) began our "Don't Be a Litter Bug Club". Students were motivated to clean up the litter from our school playground and surrounding area. This initiative has lasted! To encourage stewardship, once a month or as needed, the students and teachers walk the grounds during recess and properly dispose of collected litter.
